Castor Oil Packs For Detox and Drainage

If you’ve spent any time in the holistic health world, you’ve probably heard someone mention castor oil packs. They’ve been around for centuries — used in ancient Egyptian, Indian, and Chinese medicine long before the wellness industry had a name for them.

But lately, they’ve been having a well-deserved moment. And if you’re working on supporting your body’s detox and drainage, there’s a good reason to pay attention.

First — what exactly is a castor oil pack?

A castor oil pack is simply a piece of cloth soaked in cold-pressed castor oil, placed on the skin — typically over the liver area on the right side of the abdomen — and held in place while you rest. Some packs are wrapped with a layer of heat; others are designed to be worn overnight. Either way, the premise is straightforward: the skin absorbs the oil, and the body goes to work.

What the research says

Castor oil contains a compound called ricinoleic acid, which gives it many of its therapeutic properties. Studies have shown it has significant anti-inflammatory effects, and some research suggests it stimulates the lymphatic system … one of the body’s primary drainage channels.

“Your body is not broken — it’s just backed up. Open the pathways, and healing follows.”

When applied over the liver, castor oil packs are believed to support bile flow and liver function, which is critical for toxin elimination. Your liver is responsible for filtering everything that enters your bloodstream. When it’s sluggish or congested, toxins recirculate instead of getting cleared — and you feel it.

How castor oil packs support drainage

Drainage is the foundation of any effective detox. Before your body can safely release stored toxins, it needs open, flowing pathways to move them out. Castor oil packs support several of these key pathways at once:

  • Lymphatic system — stimulates lymph flow to help carry waste away from tissues
  • Liver and gallbladder — supports bile production and flow, essential for fat digestion and toxin excretion
  • Gut motility — castor oil has long been used to support healthy bowel movement, keeping the colon clear
  • Inflammation — reduces localized inflammation that can slow down the body’s natural elimination processes

The best part? It takes two minutes

One of the reasons I recommend castor oil packs to almost every client is how accessible they are. This isn’t a complicated protocol or an expensive therapy. It’s two minutes at bedtime … apply the pack, lie down, and let your body do the rest while you sleep.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Apply a generous amount of castor oil over your liver = right side of your abdomen, just below the ribcage
  2. Place a soft, reusable pack or cloth over the area
  3. Secure it in place and lie down comfortably
  4. Leave it on for at least an hour, or overnight if using a sleep-friendly pack
  5. Use 2 – 3 nights per week for best results

What to look for when buying

Not all castor oil is created equal. You want organic, cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil in a glass bottle, not the plastic-bottled versions you find at the drugstore. For the pack itself, look for organic cotton or wool flannel that can be reused and is easy to care for. Here’s a link to one I like on Amazon.

Who should NOT use a castor oil pack

Castor oil packs are gentle and well-tolerated by most people, but there are a few important exceptions to be aware of before you start.

Please do not use castor oil packs if you are pregnant.

Castor oil is a known uterine stimulant and can trigger contractions. This is not a risk worth taking.

If you are menstruating, be aware that some women report an increase in flow when using castor oil packs during their cycle. For most this is manageable, but if you tend toward heavy periods, you may want to pause your practice during that time and resume afterward.

As always, if you have a specific health condition or are under medical care, check with your provider before starting any new wellness practice.
